The Cruising Life – Freeport

Our second port call was Freeport in the Grand Bahamas. Over the years, Freeport has developed somewhat of a bad reputation and many folks opt to not get off the ship. The port is a working port, but get beyond that and you will find a lot to do in a beautiful setting.

Grand Bahama Island is the picture-perfect place for an unforgettable vacation. Families can go for swimming with dolphins, couples can treat themselves to a romantic dinner overlooking the ocean, and friends can try their luck at deep sea fishing during a weekend getaway. No matter who you are or where you come from, you’ll love the island spirit and culture—especially during annual festivals and local events—and the variety of sports and water activities available. Try one of the many eco-adventures or check out local shopping districts for great deals on duty-free merchandise. There truly is something for everyone on Grand Bahama Island!

Take a look around and you’ll notice the numerous historical locations that hold a piece of Grand Bahama Island’s history. Peek into the island’s past and add more to your Grand Bahama Island vacation experience. Grand Bahama’s Lucayan National Park is home to one of the largest underwater cave systems in the world. Navigate your way through six miles of chartered caverns, caves and tunnels. The national park represents an important part in Bahamian history since skulls and artifacts belonging to the Lucayan tribes, Grand Bahama’s earliest settlers, were found in the caves and throughout the park.

Grand Bahama Island offers many art galleries, where you can share your appreciation and passion for art. At Port Lucaya Marketplace, Leo’s Art Gallery gives you the opportunity to browse through Leo Brown’s vibrant paintings, illustrating life on Grand Bahama Island.

The island’s finest botanical garden was first introduced in the community as a gift. In 1973, it was officially opened to the public and dedicated to Wallace Groves for his accomplishments in creating the city of Freeport. In 2007, the Garden of the Groves suffered a devastating blow after a hurricane. Through much time and effort, it was brought back to life and re-opened a year later. When you arrive at the beautiful tropical Garden of the Groves you have the option of a guided tour or to explore on your own. The Garden has it all – it is considered one of the finest tropical Gardens in the region with over 10,000 species of flowers, plants, and trees, which attract a wide variety of birds and butterflies.
